Death at mine shaft confirmed by Eureka County Sheriff's Office

A 60-year-old man died on Thursday at the Carlin Operation, North Area mine site of Nevada Gold Mines in rural Eureka County.

Deputies responded to find an unresponsive man, a press release stated. After extensive efforts from co-workers and the Nevada Gold Mines EMTs, lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.

A deputy coroner pronounced the patient deceased. The male employee has been identified as Thomas N. Avery, of Spring Creek, Nevada.

The official cause and manner of death are pending autopsy results. The death was not directly mining-related, but occurred on mine property and appears to be from a medical event, the sheriff's office reported.
