City officials in Orem announced Friday night they are investigating multiple reports of a "noxious smell" on the city’s west side.
In a Facebook Post late Friday, Orem City Government said the smell has been reported in North Orem, Lindon, and Vineyard near the old Geneva steel plant.
The city indicated the Utah County Health Department has been alerted, but a spokesperson for that agency told 2News that the investigation has been turned over to state officials.
Dozens of people commented on the Orem City page saying they have been affected by the smell.
At least three commenters said they believed to be suffering headaches as a result.
“It’s definitely noticeable ... I thought that maybe somebody was burning, I know sometimes people do controlled burns, really that’s what it smelled like,” Orem resident Marie Mendenhall told 2News.
Orem Fire officials also confirmed they have received reports of the smell but firefighters were unable to locate the source.
2News has requests for information pending with the Utah Department of Health, and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. This story will be updated when additional information becomes available.
