A West High School teacher was arrested Wednesday at the school for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

The 54-year-old male teacher is accused of having sexual relations with a former female student from the school last year.

Salt Lake City School District Spokeswoman Yandary Chatwin said the teacher has been placed on unpaid leave. She added the district is conducting its own investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct of the educator.

Chatwin said the teacher under investigation is Rett Neale. He is a creative writing and language arts teacher.

According to the probable cause statement, the female disclosed that her relationship with Neale began in March 2017 when she was 17 years old and a student at West High.

The charging document state that sexual encounters between the student and teacher occured in his classroom one to two times a week between March 2017 and May 2017.

The sexual exchanges continued between August 2017 and February 2019 at the teacher's home, the PC statement says.

Neale was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on 3 second-degree felonies for forcible sexual abuse and 6 first-degree felonies for forcible sodomy and object rape.
