A 24-year-old man allegedly shot his brother in the foot during an argument over a jacket for his young son.
Ciza Welli Mohamed was arrested by officers responding to shots fired dispatch call in Midvale on Sunday.
Mohamed is reported as telling officers that the dispute over his son's jacket escalated into a physical fight. He then retrieved a gun from his friend and shot his brother in the foot because he said he didn't want to kill him, a police affidavit stated.
Mohamed said he shot in self-defense and gave the gun to a friend who was riding by on his bicycle. He said he initially fired two rounds after getting the gun but later stated he only shot once.
There were four children inside the apartment at the time of the shooting but were able to see the altercation, which took place outside the apartment breezeway and grass, the affidavit stated.
Mohamed was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and his brother was treated at a local hospital where bullet fragments were recovered from his wound. No firearm has been located in the incident.
Individuals named in jail affidavits are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty in a court of law.
