(KUTV) — The man who was shot on Sunday morning during a South Salt Lake burglary was moved from a hospital into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday, according to police.
The burglary took place at the Brickstone Apartments at 200 East and 3300 South.
The suspect, whom police identify as 35-year-old Raphael Ames, was shot as he attempted to break into the apartment, police say.
Ames was shot twice in his right arm, which required surgery.
The person who shot him was a guest of the female resident. He is fully cooperating with authorities.
According to police, Ames entered the apartment "in a violent, tumultuous manner."
The front door and bedroom door both withstood damage, showing evidence of forced entry, according to police.
Ames was shot as he was trying to break into the bedroom, where the shooter and female resident were holed up.
This was not a random act, according to police.
Ames is an acquaintance to the female who rents the apartment. The motivation behind the burglary is not yet known.
The man who shot Ames has no connection to the suspect, police say.
Ames was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and is accused of burglary, a 2nd-degree felony. He has not yet been formally charged, police say. The case will be screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, who will determine whether additional charges will be filed.
