A Utah father wasn't going to miss his son's wedding even if his life depended on it.
Mike Pierce, 48, is in the cardiac intensive care unit at Intermountain Medical Center (IMC). He’s been there for more than a month awaiting a heart transplant, a press release stated.
Because of that circumstance keeping him from leaving the hospital, the wedding ceremony of his son, Zach Pierce, took place Friday on the roof of the hospital's parking garage.
Zach and fiancé, Helena Ekonomo, were planning on a bigger wedding celebration later this year but with his dad’s condition, they moved the wedding date up. The roof offered the perfect venue for a few family and friends and a clear view for his father to witness the special once-in-a-lifetime moment from his ICU room.
Mike listened to the ceremony through video conferencing from a Zoom feed. He waved a tearful congratulations from his hospital bed as his son and Ekonomo tied the knot.
Along with emotional wedding nuptials, Mike also found out he’s now healthy enough to receive a heart transplant and is currently high on the list, the news release stated.
