Yes, it's true. Nickelodeon will be airing an NFL playoff game next season

WASHINGTON (SBG) -- Last week, the NFL announced they would be expanding the number of teams allowed in the playoffs to 14. The new expansion opened the door for two extra playoff games to be played during wild card weekend beginning next season.

CBS and NBC were revealed as the networks that would be adding an extra game to their schedule after each reportedly paid the NFL around $70 million, Sports Business Journal reports.

But there was a twist to the NFL's announcement that surprised many football fans. As part of CBS's agreement to air an extra NFL playoff game, the network will also produce a kid-themed broadcast of the game on their sister network Nickelodeon.

“The youth demographic is very important — there are plenty of young fans, and we want to continue to bring the game to the young fans,” NFL executive vice president Brian Rolapp told media outlets including Yahoo Sports. “What we expect it to be like, we’re not sure yet.”

Rolapp says ViacomCBS is still in the planning stages determining how the broadcast will differentiate itself from CBS' traditional broadcast. Multiple publications and social media users have joked around about the unexpected partnership.

SB Nation has suggested adding famous Nick characters Spongebob and Patrick as commentators while replacing football sounds of tackles and crashes with cartoon sounds. Slate believes the (JJ and TJ) Watt brothers should face the (Joey and Nick) Bosa brothers in a family-style "Double Dare" challenge.

This isn't the first time Nickelodeon has teamed up with the NFL or football figures. The league produced an animated series that last three seasons on the network known as "NFL Rush Zone." Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski also hosted a video clip show on the network back in 2016.

NBC will also conduct special broadcasts with its extra playoff game. Peacock, NBC's new streaming service, will simulcast the regular television broadcast. NBC's other playoff games won't be allowed to air on Peacock because the NFL's agreement with NBC for those telecasts existed before Peacock's launch, Sports Business Journal reports. Telemundo will also air a Spanish-language telecast of the game.

CBS and Nickelodeon's NFL playoff game will air Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at 4:40 p.m. Eastern time while NBC's game will air on the same day at 8:15 p.m.
